Suffering

Prayer:

We pray for peace to come on this earth and for suffering to end once and for all.

Why does God allow suffering is a difficult question. But before we look at the effect, we should consider the cause.

Suffering can be caused by many things, but probably the most common are caused by man's greed and want for power. The wars and violence in the world, even famine and hunger can be attributed to man's effect on the environment around us. We might feel cold or wet but things like that are (usually) temporary. Sometimes we feel ill or those around us cause us problems. But at the end of the day it's how we cope with these problems that defines our character. God has allowed us to do what we want and sometimes that causes problems, not only for ourselves but for those around us.

Choosing between right and wrong is something that God gave mankind right back in the Garden of Eden. Why God gave us this ability to do wrong is as big a question. Could God not have made everyone simple servants who would always do his will? That might have been simpler all around, but God has given us that choice; whether to please our selves or try to please God.

I know quite a few people who blame God when things go wrong, but never praise him when things go right.

As the effect of suffering it can make us miserable and feeling low. Often we can sympathise with the suffering of others.

So when will suffering end?

Mankind has had thousands of years to address these problems and if anything they are getting worse. The answer can only be when people try to love God and their neighbour. This state of affairs can't be until Jesus Christ comes back to this earth again. When those who have tried to follow Christ's teachings will be rewarded in a kingdom in which there is no sorrow or suffering, forever.

If you look at all the problems Job suffered, he didn't fear death, but welcomed that as a way to ease his problems. He could see beyond death to a resurrection. Job 19 has these words "And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:"

Jesus was the same. He saw that the problem he had, even to the cross, was nothing in comparison to the glory of the resurrection.

Questions:

Why does god allow suffering?

What can we do to help people who are suffering?

Does God like to see suffering?

What can he do to stop it?
