Around election time that's what we tend to hear. How one person or another will make the world a better place, how their ideals will improve our well-being and how happy we will be if only they are elected into power. As soon as the new office is elected do we appreciate the changes? Or were the promises of one thing over-shadowed by some other trade off.
The one thing all governments offer is some new change to improve our lives, but the first question is - is change what we want? Are we happy with our lives now, or are we looking for some sort of improvement that might be promised? It seems to be a human trait always to look for something better, not to be content with what we've got. So the first question is; what could be better?
Providing for the homeless, caring for those who are lonely, curing the sick probably come somewhere in most election debates and propaganda, but what about an end to warfare and violence? Can governments stop that? Or an end to famine? Or how about global warming and the environmental crisis?
Even the best governments in the world couldn't sort those out. And even if they could, governments have finite resources. In order to 'pay Peter, they must rob Paul' as the saying goes. No one gets anything for nothing. And that is if they are good governments, looking out for the populous at large instead of making sure they have a big, fat salary and living in comfort.
So is there anyone who can sort all these problems out?
But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Unlike politicians, God can promise the world and deliver it. And in fact that is just what he has done. He has said that the political power struggle will come to an end. That instead of various parties competing against each other, everyone will work together, will love their neighbour and not seek to better themselves to the detriment of others.
So when will this glorious time begin? The Bible tells us that God will send his son, Jesus Christ, back to the earth to start to put things right.
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."
