Psalms foretelling Jesus

Prayer:

Father, we thank you for Jesus, and may he return to earth soon.

Last week we looked at David being a man after God's heart. The reason why he was may have been that he was on the right wavelength. This is certainly brought out in the Psalms. We see plenty which shows his thoughts and emotions, psalms of thanksgiving and praise, but we also see his gift of prophesy.

The first one that jumps to mind is Psalm 22. No one reading that can fail to see Christ's crucifixion. Jesus even quotes verse one while on the cross. It's worth reading it if you can't remember it.

The next one is Psalm 40, which is quoted in Hebrews chapter 10, saying that doing God's will is more important than sacrifice and offering.

Admittedly that was as many as I could remember, but fortunately these days with concordances, commentaries and other electronic helps (Have you tried the Bible Sword?) we can find quite a lot more. I'm just going to list a few of those. I'm not going to set any homework other than read the following chapters/verses for yourself.

Psalm 16:10 Possibly the most pointed prophesy that Christ would rise from the dead.

Psalm 22 A description of Christ's crucifixion.

Psalm 41:9 He would be betrayed by someone who ate bread with him (at the last supper)

Not all of the prophecies are about death. Towards the end of Psalms we have two very important ones, Psalm 110 and Psalm 118.

Psalm 110 is quoted by Jesus to show he is more important than David, that he will be David's lord and that David acknowledges this and that Jesus will be a priest forever.

Psalm 118 is another psalm that David, and Jesus, lived their lives by. It is a psalm expressing their trust and faith in God. The reason why it relates more to Jesus than David can be found in verses 22 and 26, but it is definitely worth reading as the entire chapter can apply to everyone who trusts in God, even us.

Questions:

I've kept this quite short and haven't asked any questions, as I hope you'll read Psalm 22, 16:10, 41:9, 110 and 118. Most are fairly short but you may want to read one section per day over the coming week.
