Give us the courage to be a light to the world.
"Just because it's the majority doesn't make it right!"
I remember these words being spoken in a 6th Form debate while I was back at school (something to do with politics – can't remember exactly). The majority seemed to be of the opinion that if it doesn't harm anyone how can it be wrong?
Being young (and slightly naive) at the time we probably thought that the laws should change to suit us. Unfortunately this is true, it just takes a bit longer than most people hope.
In a democracy laws are made by representatives elected to power by the people. (However, God has the casting vote, and can appoint someone to the position if he needs to steer the course of history a bit. For example, Hitler was a peasant and would never have been allowed to run a boy scout camp, let alone a country, if God did not want him to fulfill a specific task of driving the Jews back to Israel.)
Contrary to most Christadelphians I don't think the moral attitude has changed much since Noah. Free (and commercial) sex, drink, greed, idolatry haven't changed. The rich are still rich, the poor are still poor, some are still starving, there's still wars, violence, etc. What has changed is the way in which it is advertised and the sensationalism that the press gives it.
This is where we come in, or rather where we stay out. God has called us to be different. There's two aspects to this; 'God has called us' and 'to be different'. We are in a privileged position. "Many are called, but few are chosen". Jesus says those who believe in him have already been chosen by him (so that means you). Those who heard but turned away, fall into the 'many' category (or we'd forever be building bigger churches to allow everyone to meet each Sunday).
To be called means to go to someone; the caller. God wants us to be separate from the world. By this he means to follow God's commandments, not the world's "if it doesn't harm anyone how can it be wrong?" This is where the 'to be different' comes in.
To be different can be positive. We are to be examples to others, that they will conceded our good deeds even if they don't believe. Jesus says we are to stand out, to let our light shine shine.
We can look forward to shining with everyone else around us, but until them we are different. We are in a blessed position.
