Bible and Science (Part 4)

Prayer:

Help to remember you are the creator of everything around us.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

--

We've already looked at light, but on the fourth day, God created the sun, moon and the stars. We've already mentioned the scientist's view that the sun was created first, yet here we have it in day four.

What does the sun give us? It generates the full spectrum of light. This includes ultra-violet and infra-red. It also generates a lot of radioactive wave lengths. Fortunately God also created the ozone layer to protect those on earth from them.

Natural light is important for plants, because they need it to photosynthesize. Fruit needs it to ripen.

So why did God create the sun in the first place?

Apart from the live giving requirements of light and heat, it also gives an aspect of faith. If God was there, floating in space, shining down on the earth, would faith be required?

Probably not.

He also give it for 'signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years'. The latter 3, I've always taken in, but the first I've tended to over-look. Yet when you look at the number of times the Bible mentions "signs in the sun, moon and stars" you'll see that they are very significant.

Jesus' birth was heralded by a star. The sign of his second coming will also be 'in the heavens'.

There's a very interesting verse in Isaiah "And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree."

Science knows very little about our universe as fact, or even theory. As we mentioned in the first of this series, most is just hypothesis. There's no way to tell, because no spacecraft has got as far as the stars (none has even got outside our own solar system). So the stars could be painted on a black sheet for all they know.

One thing is certain, that God knows and that his plan is still in place. We just need to heed the signs in the sun, moon and stars.

What signs? Are we paying enough attention?
