The Bible and Science (Part 3)

Prayer:

Help us to keep out eyes on you, and that we can see your glory in everything you've created.

Genesis 1:3-5

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

--

The first day. The first time daylight had appeared on earth. Note this was not the light of the sun, but light from God himself.

There was still darkness, so the light must have shone on either

a) part of the earth as it rotated, like the sun does today

or

b) been 'switched off' during the night.

Both are possibilities. Revelation speaks of there being no night, when God reigns.

Does this mean, just at Jerusalem? Or over the whole earth?

All life depends on light. Plants can't grow without it (except fungi), and without plants there would be nothing for us, or the animals, to feed on.

And as we mentioned last week, the light was used to measure time by. Dawn and dusk, one day!

We've already looked at the light of God in the kingdom. Jesus mentions that this is the true light – 'I am the light of the world'.

Light is important that we can see. What goes into our eyes is light that has reflected off objects, and just as Jesus said, we need to be able to see (with the eye of faith) or we are actually blind.

God's light, God's purpose are what we need to keep our eyes on. We are in a privileged position. We can see, so many of those around us can't.
